He still yearns for something bigger, better and more dangerous and adventurous. But alas, wind surfing just doesn’t quite cut it for Jim. A pony-tailed earring wearing “spacer”, Jim whoops it up all over the galaxy on his cloud-skimming wind surfer, with all the joy of today’s thrill-seeking youngsters on boogie boards, skateboards and roller blades. In “Treasure Planet”, Jim Hawkins is still a dreamer in search of big adventures – at least bigger than helping his mother wait tables at the Benbow Inn, a waystation in space catering to intergalactic travelers. “Treasure Planet” now takes young Hawkins out of the 19th Century and out of the sea, setting him far in the future and on a distant planet where he still seeks treasure, but this time out gets to meet, greet and blast aliens. ![]() Along the way, they meet up with pirates (Long John Silver, for one), face horrific storms at sea and encounter death and danger at every turn. What is good, though, is Disney’s latest very updated book to movie version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 19th Century classic “Treasure Island” in the form of “Treasure Planet.” For those that haven’t read the book or seen earlier live action versions on film, “Treasure Island” is the tale of the adventures of young Jim Hawkins when he joins up with a group of adult adventurers who set sail in search of buried treasure. But as of now, only stills remain of the film. Thanks to Walt Disney Pictures, reading may become a thing of the past for children everywhere – and that is not a good thing. No footage of the film has survived as of yet, but, due to it being distributed by Paramount and not MGM unlike London After Midnight, there is a chance it could still survive. "Maurice Tourneur's production of TREASURE ISLAND.falls so far short of its original that any comparison of the two must emphasize its defects. The most vivid acting is done by the dependable Lon Chaney in two roles, first, as the blind Pew, and then as the surly Merry." Maurice Tourneur is a Frenchman and seems incapable of making the most of an Anglo-Saxon subject." "This isn't anywhere near the feature it should be. The film looks to have gotten a very negative reception, with Variety saying: ![]() Jim and his loyal crew members find the treasure, with the help of Ben Gunn, a stranded pirate. Long John Silver and his crew get ahold of the map, but they end up retreating. They get some shelter, but end up fighting. They try to keep the pirates occupied until they get to Treasure Island. Jim discovers his plans and tells Livesey and Trelawny about this plan. However, Silver plans to mutiny on his entire crew. They both create an expedition to find Flint's treasure, and Jim becomes a stowaway on a ship with a crew of people mostly chosen by Long John Silver. However, when another (former) pirate, Billy Bones is killed at the inn by other pirates looking for the map to Flint's treasure, Jim finds it and secretly lends it to two of his mother's friends, Dr. He then helps his (widowed) mother run her inn, the Admiral Benbow Inn. A young Jim Hawkins encounters Long John Silver the pirate while both are searching for Captain Flint's buried treasure. ![]()
